The plan was simple. A short flight to the surface, storm the base, recover the admiral and escape on Dreadnought’s dropships, Wickham and Alton. Smaller than the Deathless dropships, they carried thirty Marines in relative comfort or fifty at a push, so they’d have to use both to recover the company.

But first they had to get to the planet’s surface. Warden and Plymouth company were strapped into seats in two dozen drop pods, stacked in the launchers like train carriages in a tunnel, all desperate to be on their way.

Marine X had somehow inserted himself into Warden’s pod again, as if he saw himself as responsible for the captain’s safety. Milton and Goodwin completed the four-berth complement, their kit carefully stowed in bays under their seats.

<This form of travel appears to be neither comfortable nor safe> sent Agent O.

Marine X grinned in his helmet. <Difficult to sleep on one of these rides> admitted Ten. <But at least they’re short>

<Maybe we can improve the design>

<More cup holders would certainly be appreciated>

<Is this the time for humour? The Valkyr tend to be very quiet and serious in tense or stressful situations>

<Everyone has their own way of coping. We use humour, the darker the better> He looked up at the door controls where someone stuck a hand-written label above the emergency ramp release. <See that?>

<It is a confusing sign. What does it mean?>

<It’s a joke. ‘Release the Kraken’>

“Ten seconds to launch,” came a voice over the comms.

<I see> sent Agent O. <Releasing the Kraken at the wrong time is bad, just like pressing that button. Very clever. I will research further while you enjoy your away day>

<Ha! That’s the spirit>

<Good luck, Ten>

<Thanks. Should be a walk in the park>
